Emma was given the middle name Grant because her father was wanting a boy he could name for Ulysses S Grant. She was raised on a farm in Mills Co., Iowa. She married Ivan Coulter and they followed her older sister and parents into Nebraska. Ivan and Emma and their children moved to midwestern Nebraska. Emma spoke of there adventure on the new open territories of the Nebraska prairies. There were no schools in this area which Emma took care of by forming a school and teaching the children in the area. She also spoke of the Indian women coming into the trading post with their papoose on their back. After Ivans father past away they moved to Missouri.
