- 1227637"Historical families of Bentonville, Benton Co., Arkansas", submitted by Edward Roy Galyean F315 page 487, June 2001 Shadrick Galyean was born Dec 24, 1801 in North Carolina and died in 1877 in Benton County, Ark. He married Mahaley Rector on Nov. 8, 1822 in Surry County, NC, and they had thirteen children. After Mahaley`s death, he married Ruth Lowe on Feb. 21, 1848 and they had eight children. It was near the first of Sept. of 1859 that Shadrick and his wife Ruth and their family left their North Carolina home for Arkansas. Nine of the children from Shadrick`s first marriage remained in North Carolina and Virginia where many of their descendants still live. The trip to Arkansas was made in ox carts and was very difficult with winter coming on. They never traveled on Sunday. Wild game and firewood were prepared on Saturday, and the Lord`s Day would be quietly observed by some spring or river. Near the end of November of that same year, after having been on the road about three months, they arrived in Benton County, Arkansas. The family became early settlers in Dickson Township around the Hiwasse community, and most of them spent their entire lives here. Many of the early Galyean`s were farmers and fruit growers and were Baptists. Shadrick and many of his descendants are buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Hiwasse and a good number of the family are still living in the Hiwasse and Gravette area. Several of them attend the Hiwasse Christian Church.
